What is Motor Oil and What Does it Do?

While you're likely aware of your vehicle's oil, you may not know exactly what it is and what it does. So, that's where we'll start.

Motor oil is a mixture of different oils and additives that work within your vehicle's engine. When poured into your vehicle, oil will travel throughout your engine, completing two integral jobs. The first job of oil is to clean the engine, picking up any dirt and debris that have entered the engine. Secondly, your oil is responsible for lubricating different engine parts, allowing them to interact with one another in the proper fashion.

After you've driven with the same oil for a while, it will become too old and dirty to perform these jobs, calling for an oil change.

What is an Oil Change?

When you arrive at your oil change service interval, usually every 5,000 to 10,000 miles depending upon the oil your vehicle takes, you'll want to have your oil swapped out. Whether you elect to complete your own oil change or want to bring it into our service center to have it performed, the same steps will be observed:

1. First, you'll need to remove your drain plug and let your old oil run out. Also at this time, you'll want to remove your old oil filter.

2. Once your oil is drained, you'll want to put your drain plug back in.

3. From there, you'll be ready to add a new oil filter and fresh oil in that order.

4. After you've completed step three, you'll just want to check your oil level to ensure there are no leaks. Then, you'll be ready to hit the roads again!

The process, as seen above, is simple. So, usually it can be completed in under an hour.
