Let's go through the six main steps you need to take to ensure you're staying safe and getting the support you need. Schedule an appointment with us when you're ready!

1.Stop Your Vehicle

The first thing you should do following impact is to bring your vehicle to a complete stop and throw your hazard lights on to signal caution to other drivers. Then, you and the other vehicle(s) will need to move to a safe spot out of reach of other cars.

Please note, depending on the severity of the crash, moving your car may not be possible. If this is the case, please skip to step three: calling the police.

2.Provide Aid to Fellow Drivers

Once in a safe spot, take the time to check and make sure you're not injured. If you feel any tension or pain in your body at all, do not move and wait for help instead. If you're free to move around, then go check on the other passengers involved in the crash to ensure they are safe as well.

If anyone is injured in any way, dial 911 immediately. Often times, after a car accident, injuries can take a while to show themselves, so any immediate pain requires medical attention.

3.Call the Police (If Needed)

As mentioned before, call the police the second anyone seems injured or if your car is unable to move. However, in minor accidents, calling the police is up to your discretion.

A light tap probably doesn't need assistance, but any major damage should involve police assessment. Make sure to get a copy of any police reports or citations as this will be needed when filling a report with your insurance company.

4.Exchange Information

One of the most important steps following a car accident is to exchange information with all other drivers involved. Some of the info you need includes:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Driver's license number
  • License plate number
  • Auto insurance information
  • Make/model/body style of all carts
  • VIN of all cars

5.Take Photos

Photos of the scene are also really important following a car accident. When making a claim with your insurance company, you want to make sure it covers only the damages occurring at your accident site and pictures can assist with that.

6.Report to Your Insurance Company

After safely arriving home, you'll need to report the incident to your insurance company. Take a moment to gather all the paperwork and information you need and be prepared to give them a detailed account of the accident.
